5th Annual
Oscar
Night® America

Midland Theatre
1228 Main
Kansas City, Missouri

Truly a night of glitz and glamour, Hollywood seemed a bit closer as Variety celebrated Oscar night and the Academy Awards®. On hand to preside over festivities at the Midland Theatre was an official golden Oscar statuette. As movie buffs filed in to enjoy the 5th annual Variety event, appropriately titled "Oscar Night® America,"
Pinkerton guards kept a watchful eye on the golden icon. To establish both mood and place, a popular string quartet greeted partygoers with the happy strings of "Kansas City".

Speaking for the more than 1,000 celebrants, spokesperson Kristine Curley said, "It's fun to get dressed up and watch the awards on the big screen." As if to emphasize the point, tuxedoed men and formally gowned women were observed throughout the lobby and auditorium, some enjoying the delicious cuisine provided by participating restaurateurs, while others paid close attention to the happenings on the screen.
An added attraction creating collector interest was a silent auction featuring a script of "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" and a genuine Shaquille O'Neal autographed basketball. Proceeds contributed extra dollars for the kids.

Kevin White, Kurtis Wilkerson and David Schwindmann couldn't let the evening go by without demonstrating their support for a favorite contender. In Army fatigues, no one could mistake their choice for best picture, "Saving Private Ryan." Schwindmann and party, enjoying the curious attention of the crowd, suggested that next year more Oscar-nighters dress in costume, too.
Also commenting on the evening's events, NationsBank marketing executive Shelley Buffington noted the Oscar Party was an excellent way to mix business and pleasure. "Many of our clients are here," she explained. It was left, however, to former Chief Barker Chet Francis to sum up the proceedings. Said Francis, "With a shift to Sunday nights, expectations for an even larger turnout will help Variety meet and exceed its funding goals.
And the winners are. . . the special needs children of our area. Thank you, Oscar® for helping us keep our kids. And with love in our hearts, thank you, Kansas City, for your generous support.
