Hy-Vee Golf Scramble Benifits Children

Leave it to Nancy Pagel and the folks at Hy-Vee to put on one of the premier golf events of the season. Golfers gathered for this year's shotbun at the WinterStone Golf Course in Independence, Mo the morning of May 24, 2004. First thing on the agenda was a "get-em-started" continental breakfast, followed at 8:30 am with that long drive down the fairway signaling the start of play. Nancy Pagel was all smiles. "It was a great day all-around," she said. "A great day for golf (we beat the impending storm) and a great day for the kids. Though a few additional Changes may trickle in, we're looking at a total proceeds of $46,000!"

Chairman Pagel offers these details: 36 foursomes (144 players.) Silent Auction netted $3000. Fun Extras: longest ball, hole-in-one, and mulligan options, Celebrities: former Royals' players catcher John Walthan and pitcher Roger Nelson. A team of former Negro League ball players teed up for the kids. On site and on-air STAR 102 Producer Bret Fleshman kept listeners keyed in on play data. STAR 102 contest winner Paul Boyd was a special guest.

And what's a party without great food? The answer came from the Independence Hy-Vee store with its display of "fit for a king" buffet specialties.

Nancy Pagel sums up the day's outing in 3 succinct words:

"Terrific, Just Terrific!"
